Matarangi means “Face of Heaven” and is a modern tourist town consisting of 300 permanent residents and more than 7,000 holiday residents during the summer periods. Matarangi township, built on a white-sand spit, is just 30 years old. Developers Ken Woodhead and Warrick Keddle conceived the resort in 1978.
Matarangi is well known for its prestige, luxury and residents' lavish lifestyles. It has a small shopping complex including a dairy, cafe, restaurant, liquor store and real estate agents. It also has a fire station and “The Dunes" eighteen-hole golf course (designed by golfer, Bob Charles). Throughout the township there are many tennis courts, parks and reserves. There is also a small airstrip.
Matarangi offers 4.5km of picture perfect white-sand beach. An all-tide boat ramp provides access to water perfect for sailing, kayaking, water skiing, jet skiing and great fishing and diving. Dolphins and Orcas are frequent visitors in the water around the town.
