A WHANGAMATA OBSESSION

Whangamata is a thriving coastal town. Gone are the days of septic tanks and bore water. The town is fully reticulated and has every infrustructure you can imagine or that you would expect for a permanent population close to 4000. In the summer the population soars to 10-20,000 and at the annual Beach Hop (held in March) it creeps up to 40,000 for three to four days. Whangamata has its famous surfing "Bar" (the Whangamata bar). Surfers come here from all over the world to surf one of the longest rides in the southern hemisphere. Its all here in a our town on the shores of New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula.

WHIRITOA

Whiritoa is an idyllic seaside village just 14kms or 15 mins south of Whangamata (or 16 kms north of Waihi) with a permanent population of around 100 people and a holiday poulation of around 1000. There are about 350 homes here of modest means and some exclusive beachfront properties as well. The local surfclub is the focal point of the community in the summer and the settlement has a functioning community centre, with library and fire station. Enjoy a morning coffee or takeaways from the local shop. Its the perfect getaway. Check out our listings on this website or go direct to www.whiritoabeach.co.nz

Onemana Beach

Onemana is just stunning. A cut above most other places on the coast. It was once a sea shore farm, and it's developers recognised the potential of its quite steep hills, almost all curving round to the shape of the bay, giving almost all of the 300 odd dwellings here a view of the ocean and its surrounding off shore islands. The settlement sports a well stocked dairy and grocery store, a restaurant/cafe, and a variety of crafts people. It also has a chalet style motel, condominiums and a few private homestay establishments, a spa pool complex with swimming pool and barbecue areas, two tennis courts and a small children's playground on its extensive grass reserve bordering the white sand surf beach. In the surrounding hills there are walks to persue and fishing from the beach or nearby rocks is a popular pastime for visitors and permanents alike.

Onemana - truly idylic, it's just awesome!

Opoutere Beach

Opoutere - Just 10kms north of Whangamata is the last great undeveloped white sand surf beach on the coromandel peninsula accessible to the public. Exceptionally clear water for swimming, surfing and surfcasting. At the southern end of Opoutere Beach lies the narrow entrance to the Wharekawa Harbour which is dominated by a spectacular sandspit. The spit is a breeding ground for several endangered species of sea birds including the "New Zealand Dotterel" and "Variable Oystercatcher". Opoutere has a motor camp, and a youth hostel but no shops or commercial entities. Because of this area's unique zoning "Coastal Residential" this is part of the coromandel that can never be commercially developed like Whangamata or Onemana has been. There is a complete ban on subdivision and commercial development under the "coastal residential" zoning and this is the reason that Opoutere is so expensive and sought after. It's a sleepy hollow that will never be exploited. From Opoutere you can walk along the shore of the Wharekawa Harbour to the Ohui Beach. This is a particularly beautiful spot with a white sand beach that stretches for at least 5 kms. Discover the rugged untouched beauty of Opoutere, tranquil and unspoilt.
