Opoutere Beach
Opoutere - Just 10kms north of Whangamata is the last great undeveloped white sand surf beach on the coromandel peninsula accessible to the public. Exceptionally clear water for swimming, surfing and surfcasting. At the southern end of Opoutere Beach lies the narrow entrance to the Wharekawa Harbour which is dominated by a spectacular sandspit. The spit is a breeding ground for several endangered species of sea birds including the "New Zealand Dotterel" and "Variable Oystercatcher". Opoutere has a motor camp, and a youth hostel but no shops or commercial entities. Because of this area's unique zoning "Coastal Residential" this is part of the coromandel that can never be commercially developed like Whangamata or Onemana has been. There is a complete ban on subdivision and commercial development under the "coastal residential" zoning and this is the reason that Opoutere is so expensive and sought after. It's a sleepy hollow that will never be exploited. From Opoutere you can walk along the shore of the Wharekawa Harbour to the Ohui Beach. This is a particularly beautiful spot with a white sand beach that stretches for at least 5 kms. Discover the rugged untouched beauty of Opoutere, tranquil and unspoilt.
